American Airlines Flight Aborts Takeoff After Near Miss

An American Airlines flight headed to Bermuda had to abort its takeoff at Miami Airport when another plane unexpectedly entered the same runway.

On Friday night, the two aircraft came alarmingly close—just a third of a mile apart—as air traffic controllers raced against time to prevent a collision.

The flight, with 112 passengers on board, was moving at around 90 miles per hour when the pilot suddenly spotted “another aircraft on the runway” and quickly applied the brakes, according to reports.

In a tense interaction captured on air traffic control audio, a pilot from a different plane claimed, “Sir, we were just told to cross the runway.” The controller clarified that it was a different flight that was cleared.

The Federal Aviation Administration later confirmed that the commercial aircraft had not received permission to be on the runway, leading to an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, the private jet operator, NetJets, declined to comment, and American Airlines has also been approached for a statement.

This was not an isolated incident; on the same day, there was a report of a potential near miss at Newark Airport involving a United Airlines flight set for landing. The pilot mentioned a drone they narrowly avoided, describing it as being “approximately 100 feet below.”

Last week at Boston Logan Airport, another incident occurred where an American Airlines jet came within just 90 feet of a Delta Air Lines aircraft.

The American Airlines Airbus A319 eventually departed Miami just before 8 p.m., approximately two hours behind schedule, and arrived in Bermuda shortly before midnight local time.
