Season 3 Episode 2 of 'House of the Dragon': Rhaenyra discovers that Jace has died

House of the Dragon: Season 3 Episode 2 Highlights

For those keeping up with HBO’s House of the Dragon, there was a significant moment in the Season 3 premiere when Prince Jace Velaryon (played by Harry Collett) meets his end. However, something else unfolded in Episode 2 that caught my attention—Rhaenyra, his mother, portrayed by Emma Darcy.

**Spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2, now available on HBO Max**

In the second episode, Baela Targaryen (Bethany Antonia) returns to Dragonstone bearing Jace’s lifeless body. She solemnly processes through the castle, guiding a group of dragonpit servants until they reach Rhaenyra’s chambers. When Rhaenyra sees her son, she inquires about the battle, to which Baela replies, “We won.”

But as Rhaenyra gazes at Jace, it seems she momentarily loses herself. Instinctively shifting into maternal mode, she questions him, “Jace, what did you do?” The onlookers witness her grief manifesting in a mix of confusion and anguish as she begins to interrogate her son’s body, treating him like a child in trouble. It’s a poignant moment that magnifies the horror of reality she’s facing.

“Honestly, that scene was a bit chilling,” Emma Darcy shared in an interview. “There’s a unique bond that forms when you work with someone closely. Each time a death scene is filmed, it also feels like losing a colleague.”

Darcy noted the depth behind Rhaenyra’s words, “What did you do?”

“When I delivered that line, I realized I wanted it to feel real, almost as if she was waiting for an answer. The denial in that moment felt honest. It’s like accepting the brutal truth is just too painful.”

Her co-star Harry Collett, who portrayed Jace even after his character’s death, commented on the challenging atmosphere on set. They had even thought about using props but he wanted to fully participate in the scene.

“Emma brought such a profound performance. All the reactions in that scene felt incredibly genuine,” Collett reflected. “You could see real tears on Bethany’s face, and that was a touching response to Emma’s acting.”

Darcy praised Collett’s contribution as well. “Harry was incredible that day. It’s odd how we navigated this emotional landscape together without much discussion beforehand, but he gave me space to breathe during filming.”

She elaborated, “I deeply appreciate the respect and understanding we have as actors. Harry’s a remarkable person. I was so relieved when we wrapped.”

Ironically, Collett was relieved for a different reason—he nearly dozed off during takes.

“I couldn’t exactly move, right? I was supposed to be dead,” he joked. “By the end of the day, I fought hard not to fall asleep, especially during the wide shots with my eyes closed the whole time.”

“Imagine snoring as a corpse—definitely a no-go while Emma is delivering such a fantastic performance,” he laughed. Thankfully, even in his death scene, he managed to stay awake throughout the shoot.

House of the Dragon will return next Sunday at 9 PM ET on HBO and HBO Max.
