Disputed decision helps Paraguay defeat Germany in World Cup penalty shootout

Paraguay Shocks Germany in Penalty Shootout

On Monday, Paraguay caused an upset by defeating four-time FIFA World Cup champions Germany 4-3 in a penalty shootout, moving on to the Round of 16 in a match filled with key controversial moments.

The drama unfolded during extra time, which concluded in a 1-1 draw after the initial 90 minutes.

Germany, asserting dominance throughout the match, saw Paraguay seize their moment when Julio Enciso scored a header in the 42nd minute. Germany responded in the 54th minute with Kai Havertz, who curled in a header to equalize.

As the match progressed, Germany pushed hard, bringing in fresh players and creating opportunity after opportunity. Yet, when extra time commenced, it appeared as if Germany was poised to score again and take the lead.

A potential breakthrough moment came when Jonathan Tarr headed a corner kick past Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gil. The German crowd erupted, but it was short-lived as the match official went to review the play with VAR.

It turned out that Waldemar Anton had impeded Gil’s path to the ball, raising a foul question. Following the review, the referee declared that Anton’s actions prevented Gil from adequately defending against the header, nullifying the goal.

After 30 tense minutes, the score remained tied at 1-1, leading to the first penalty shootout of the tournament to decide which team would continue onward.

Germany faced an early setback as Havertz’s attempt was saved by Gil. Meanwhile, Mauricio scored the opening penalty for Paraguay, putting them on strong footing.

Both teams scored their next two penalties, but then Germany’s Nick Woltemade was thwarted by Gil. Paraguay had a chance to seal the win, but Antonio Sanabria’s penalty sailed wide.

Nadiem Amiri kept Germany’s hopes alive, scoring on their fifth attempt. Paraguay’s Fabian Balbuena stepped up next, but Germany’s Manuel Neuer, a renowned goalkeeper, made a crucial save.

Though it looked like Germany might still find a way, Tarr’s chance for a winning goal ended poorly, with his shot going over the bar. This blunder allowed Paraguay’s Jose Canale to take the decisive spot kick, which he executed flawlessly, sending Paraguay into celebration.

This match marked the first time Germany has lost on penalties in World Cup history, a shocking end to their journey in the 2026 tournament.

The scene sparked reflections on how quickly fortunes can shift in soccer—but those debates will carry on for some time.

Looking ahead, Paraguay prepares to face the winner of the upcoming match between France and Sweden, set to take place at New York/New Jersey Stadium on Tuesday at 5 PM ET.
