Mark Teixeira claims MLB Pride Night controversy hushes Christian athletes

MLB Investigated by Justice Department Over Pride Hat Issue

Major League Baseball is currently facing scrutiny from the Department of Justice due to a controversy involving Pride-themed hats. During San Francisco Giants’ “Pride Night,” some pitchers added Bible verses to their rainbow caps. This action led MLB to issue a warning and prompted the Justice Department to question what they termed a “double standard” related to the previous acceptance of “Black Lives Matter” patches alongside the religious inscriptions. Notably, this controversy echoes incidents like the York Revolution, where games were forfeited after players declined to wear Pride jerseys. It raises significant questions regarding free speech and religious rights in sports.

Mark Teixeira, a former New York Yankees player and current congressional candidate from Texas, labeled MLB’s response to the issue a “complete disaster,” suggesting it aims to silence Christian athletes.

On his podcast, Teixeira expressed that politics should not infiltrate sports. “In this culture, people try to silence us,” he stated in an interview. “We won’t let the Giants’ decisions or outside influences suppress our beliefs.”

This issue originated during the most recent “Pride Night” event. A few players protested by inscribing Bible verses on their caps or refusing to wear them altogether. An MLB spokesperson confirmed that such actions breached established rules and mentioned that players had been cautioned about future violations.

Teixeira criticized the expectation for players to don hats they may not agree with, describing the situation as a serious public relations failure. “Forcing athletes to support something against their beliefs, it’s just not fair,” he remarked.

He reflected on his long career, noting that out of 162 games each season, issues like this rarely arose. “Forcing players to wear Pride caps, well, I think that crosses a line,” he commented.

Some players, including pitcher Landen Loup, shared that their inclusion of Bible verses represented “God’s covenant” and not malice towards others.

The Giants extended their apologies to the LGBTQ+ community, acknowledging the hurt caused by the incident. Meanwhile, Senator Josh Hawley defended the players’ rights to practice their faith openly.

Commissioner Rob Manfred assured that the players involved in the Bible verse episode would not face fines or disciplinary action. He also explained that the verbal warnings given were issued before it became clear that the players had not been correctly informed that wearing the Pride cap was optional. He clarified that “routine verbal warnings for uniform policy violations” were issued out of a lack of communication from the Giants.
