Trump administration allocates $150 million for humanitarian aid in Venezuela following earthquake

U.S. Response to Venezuela’s Earthquakes

In Manama, Bahrain, Secretary Rubio discussed how the U.S. government is responding to a series of devastating earthquakes in Venezuela. He highlighted the deployment of search and rescue teams as well as medical resources and humanitarian aid, emphasizing the urgency of saving lives. Rubio also reiterated President Trump’s commitment to supporting Venezuela as it seeks recovery and long-term stability.

The Trump administration claimed to have the Venezuelan government’s full backing for these humanitarian efforts, which have stirred anger among those opposing the president. Following last week’s earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in northern South America, the U.S. stepped in to assist, stating that both the Venezuelan government and its people welcomed the support.

“Thanks to the unprecedented U.S. response to these deadly earthquakes, we can confirm that Venezuela’s interim authorities are fully compliant,” a State Department official conveyed.

The death toll has sadly surged to nearly 2,000, and it continues to rise.

“Every request we made was quickly fulfilled, showcasing a remarkable outpouring of support from the Venezuelan people for the Americans on the ground,” the official added.

Meanwhile, President Trump is reportedly considering making Venezuela and its vast oil reserves a permanent part of the U.S., which, I think, raises some eyebrows among the international community.

On January 3, U.S. special forces detained Nicolás Maduro after an intense nighttime operation that caught his armed guards off guard. They apprehended him at his palace, and he is now awaiting trial in the U.S. on various charges.

The progressive left has come to Maduro’s defense following his arrest, arguing that these actions violate international law. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Rashida Tlaib have voiced concerns, calling the U.S. actions a “gross violation” of international norms.

Tlaib mentioned on social media, “President Trump’s illegal and unprovoked bombing of Venezuela and the kidnapping of its president are acts of a rogue state.” The sentiment expressed certainly indicates that many Americans hope to avoid another regime change conflict.

In response to the crisis, the Trump administration moved quickly, allocating $150 million for humanitarian relief and assembling a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) with over 250 members, including specialized urban search and rescue teams, which are crucial for carrying out life-saving operations.

The U.S. military has also been involved in providing logistical support during this crisis. Interestingly, diplomatic relations have been restored, but officials in Washington stress that this cooperation is temporary and do not recognize Maduro’s presidency as a long-term resolution for the country’s issues.
