Holmes on the Road to Recovery for the Mets
TORONTO — Clay Holmes is currently in the process of rehab, yet it’s clear he still needs a few weeks before making his return to the Mets.
As interim manager Andy Green shared, the right-handed pitcher will be engaging in bullpen sessions this week while recovering from a fractured right fibula.
“I’d like to say he’s ahead of schedule, but I don’t want to overstate things,” Green noted after the Mets secured a 3-0 victory against the Blue Jays at Rogers Center on Tuesday. “Things seem to be going well and that’s encouraging.”
Holmes is on the Mets’ radar as a potential signing before the August 3 trade deadline, considering he can opt out of his contract after this season.
Before his injury, Holmes had been the Mets’ most reliable starting pitcher, boasting a 2.39 ERA over eight starts.
Rehab for Other Players
Luis Robert Jr. has initiated a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Syracuse, joining Jorge Polanco in his recovery efforts.
When asked about the potential impact of Roberts and Polanco joining the lineup, Green emphasized the challenges they’ve faced without them. “What we’ve really felt against left-handed pitchers is the absence of right-handed hitters in the lineup,” he explained. “Polanco would be a great addition—his switch-hitting ability really makes the lineup more formidable.”
“I think having them, even just on the bench, gives us a variety of options, which could really pay off in key moments throughout the game,” he added.
As for AJ Ewing, who made a notable ground ball play, Green expressed caution about any potential shift to the infield for the rookie after Robert’s return. “He’s still adjusting to the big leagues and has been doing a solid job in center field,” Green pointed out.
Mets Make Moves
Additionally, the Mets have signed outfielder Christopher Morrell to a minor league contract, as reported by industry sources. Morrell, 27, participated in 22 games with the Marlins this season and recorded a .425 OPS.
