Mets agree to minor league contract with Christopher Morel

New Contract for Christopher Morrell with the Mets

David Stearns is diving into yet another landfill project, it seems.

On Tuesday, he signed versatile player Christopher Morrell to a minor league contract. This move is in line with Stearns’ track record of bringing in players who could use a boost to help revitalize the Mets. The signing was confirmed by Jon Heyman.

The contract comes with several opt-out clauses, and Morrell will head to Triple-A Syracuse to start his next chapter.

Turning 27 recently, Morrell was drafted by the Marlins, but he hasn’t quite matched the early success he found with the Cubs. While he struggled with a batting average under .250, he managed to compile 42 home runs and 117 RBIs from 2022 to 2023.

His inconsistent performances did raise eyebrows, as he was seen as a promising talent for a Cubs team going through a rebuilding phase.

However, the start of 2024 has been rocky for Morrell. He’s only hitting .199, despite having launched 18 home runs.

After some ups and downs, the Cubs traded him to the Rays in exchange for Isaac Paredes, but Morrell did not find his stride in Tampa, struggling for over a year. His numbers dipped further, yielding a .219 average in 2025 before being drafted again.

As a free agent, Morrell inked a one-year deal worth $2 million with the Marlins but faced difficulties, appearing in just 22 games due to an oblique injury. In that stint, he batted a disappointing .162 with just one home run, leading to his release on June 26.

Now, with this contract, there’s a possibility of him moving up to the major leagues soon or hitting the free-agent market again, depending on how things go.

While Morrell has experience in both the infield and outfield, it seems likely that he’ll concentrate on infield positions, considering that the current Mets outfield is one of the few highlights in an otherwise challenging season.

The Mets, unfortunately, haven’t had the best luck lately, dropping nine of their last ten games and sitting at 35-50 overall.
