Rep. Al Green: I am proud to be American for the impeachment of a ‘Reckless, Ruthless, Lawless President’

Rep. Al Green Reflects on Impeachment as U.S. Approaches 250th Anniversary

As the United States gears up for its 250th birthday, Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) expressed his pride in the ability to impeach the president as a fundamental aspect of American democracy.

Video journalist Nicholas A. Barassy asked Green what made him most proud to be an American in light of this milestone. Green replied, “I’m very proud to say that impeachment is an option to remove a reckless, callous, and lawless president from office. I’m proud to know that something like that exists.”

These comments came after Green chose not to comment on the recent Democratic primary results, which saw Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) and other Democratic Socialist candidates victorious.

When asked about potential issues facing the mainstream wing of his party and its impact on the midterm elections, Green hesitated, saying, “Well, I rarely answer substantive questions without much thought, so I’ll need to take time to consider what transpired. It feels too early to draw conclusions just yet.”

Barassy then pointed out that two incumbents had lost in New York, which prompted Green to acknowledge, “We need to analyze these results. Someday we’ll have an answer, but not today. We came here for another reason.”

Interestingly, these remarks followed Green’s own loss in the recent Democratic primary runoff for Texas’ newly established 18th Congressional District, where he garnered 31.4% of the votes while fellow Democrat Christian Menefee took 68.6%.

Former President Trump reacted to Green’s defeat with a scathing post on Truth Social, congratulating the Democratic Party and labeling Green as one of the “most mentally defective members” in congressional history. Trump’s message included, “I will miss that lunatic.”

Over the years, Green has repeatedly sought to impeach Trump, filing articles in June 2025 over the president’s actions regarding Iranian nuclear facilities. He accused Trump of power abuse and authoritarianism, but his initiatives were routinely shelved. In December 2025, he aimed to impeach Trump again, denouncing him as an “abuser of presidential power.” That proposal also struggled to gain traction.

In another lively moment, Green condemned Trump’s behavior during a speech to Congress in March 2025, where the former president was noted for a particularly chaotic display. Furthermore, in February 2026, an incident occurred during the State of the Union address that drew widespread attention.
