Superintendent contacts police regarding board president after feeling 'poked' during tense meeting

Chaos at Long Island City School Board Meeting

A school board meeting in Long Island City took a chaotic turn when the district’s interim superintendent called the police on the newly elected school board president. The conflict arose after an alleged incident where the president, Michael Pomerico, “poked” the superintendent, Shakira Miller.

This incident unfolded on Wednesday evening, following a regular session at Caroline G. Atkinson Elementary School. Reports indicate that Pomerico confronted Miller about obtaining district documents when tensions escalated, leading to the alleged poking as Miller stood up during the exchange.

Miller reportedly became infuriated with Pomerico, claiming he “put his hands on her,” and subsequently called 911, leading to police arriving at the scene.

According to reports, Pomerico defended himself by stating that his action was merely a light tap with his finger to grab Miller’s attention.

Law enforcement officers interviewed both Miller and Pomerico, along with members of the school board and a journalist who witnessed the incident. Ultimately, no arrests were made, and Pomerico faced no charges.

This incident unfolded amidst an already heated board meeting, which featured a lively crowd with cheering, boos, and accusations of misconduct flying between attendees and board members throughout the night.

As of now, neither Miller nor Pomerico has commented on the situation, and inquiries made to the Freeport police have gone unanswered.
