Independence Day Event Praised by Trump Despite Challenges
President Donald Trump hailed the “Salute to America 250” event as a success, even in light of tough weather conditions.
On Sunday, he took to Truth Social to emphasize the magnitude of the celebration, noting that inclement weather added an unexpected twist and that organizers faced quite a bit of pressure.
Just hours before his July 4th speech and the anticipated record-breaking fireworks display, severe thunderstorms forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of attendees. Nonetheless, Trump insisted that he wouldn’t delay the festivities.
“The crowd at 7:05 p.m. was 422,000 people! We were all forced to leave because of the weather; the event was canceled, and everyone was gone due to lightning. When I heard it was canceled, I immediately reversed that decision and waited a while for people to come back,” Trump explained.
Despite the initial rush to leave, Trump claimed that over 150,000 people came back to enjoy the rest of the celebrations on the National Mall.
“Incredibly, at least 150,000 people returned, and it was an even better night than normal. It showed how we work under pressure,” he added.
Additionally, he lauded the efforts of the Secret Service and law enforcement for their quick response amidst the weather-related chaos.
“Congratulations to the Secret Service and law enforcement who were able to get so many people back into the arena so quickly! The night was made even more amazing by the heavy rain that came down right after the fireworks display!” he concluded.
The storm impacted various Fourth of July festivities beyond Washington, including a postponement of New York City’s iconic Macy’s fireworks show due to the threat of severe weather.
