Florida Republican insists prioritizing border security over foreign aid ‘nonnegotiable’

Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) said she and her House Republican colleagues say border security is “non-negotiable” and will prioritize it over foreign aid as lawmakers debate additional spending packages. He said he thinks it should be done.

The border dispute is intertwined with requests for additional aid from Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

“For me and many of my Republican colleagues in the House, we believe the border package is non-negotiable,” Cammack said. In an interview on Tuesday At NewsNation.

“Before we look abroad or abroad, we must first and foremost strengthen our border security. If we don't secure this border, we face the worst humanitarian, public health, and national security crisis in modern history. Because it's going to happen,'' she added.

“This is unsustainable, and every town in America today is a border town as a result of open border policies. So this is going to be the biggest leverage point in the House. There's no border package. That means there is no package for anything else.”

The Senate adjourned last month without an agreement on funding for Ukraine or border security, ending a historically unproductive session. The members are not scheduled to return to Japan until early January.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York blamed former President Donald Trump's influence on the Republican-controlled House for the lack of success.

“This year, with a Republican House majority, has been marked by chaos, extremism, and paralysis. Divided government and MAGA extremism have made 2023 legislation extremely difficult.” There's no question about it,” Schumer said in remarks on the floor.

“For most of the year, it was as if Donald Trump himself was in control of the House and it was very difficult to get anything done,” he said.

Republicans have blamed President Biden for the border crisis, but it has become increasingly clear that it will be a focus for the party in 2024.
