An escaped Indiana inmate was rearrested at a Motel 6 after he was mistakenly put on duty despite having previously escaped, authorities said Monday.
According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, Charles Gerstorff, 30, was assigned to work at the City of Marion Animal Care and Control Building, adjacent to the 4H Fairgrounds on W. State Route 18, when he was arrested at 7 a.m. He reportedly left the scene around 1:50 p.m.
Authorities said the deputy supervising the crew was “distracted and doing other work” when Gerstorff fled. Several police officers helped search for the fugitive, but the search was called off after several hours.
Late Monday, deputies located Gerstorf at the Motel 6 off Shadeland Avenue in Indianapolis, more than an hour's drive from the Marion Animal Care and Control building, and took the fugitive into custody.

During the search for Gerstorff, the sheriff's office announced to the public that the inmate should not be held in any capacity because he had previously attempted to escape.
“Upon review of the case, this inmate should not have been part of the task force because he committed the crime of escape while on home confinement and on an electronic monitoring program,” officials said.

The sheriff's office said Gerstorff was placed on the crew due to an “oversight.”

Gerstorf's previous charges include resisting law enforcement, possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia, according to online jail records.
