NYPD detective arrested for shoplifting at Long Island Home Depot

An NYPD detective working in Commissioner Edward Caban's office was arrested Saturday for shoplifting from a hardware store on Long Island, officials said.

Special Detective Christina Cancel, 54, is suspected of stealing $160 worth of merchandise from the shelves of a Deer Park hardware store, according to Suffolk County Police.

Cancel, who made more than $150,000 last year, is accused of stealing $130 in merchandise around 10:15 a.m. and another $30 just before noon.

It is not clear what items she allegedly stole.

When questioned by police, the 19-year veteran allegedly gave a false name and date of birth.

Cancel, a Hicksville resident, was charged with two counts of petty theft and false impersonation.

She was suspended without pay, New York City police officials confirmed.

A message left on the cancellation number was not immediately returned.

The officer, who is described as having sticky fingers, had been working in the police chief's office since July, the same month that Caban was selected to lead the NYPD.

In 2015, Cancel was disciplined by the NYPD for using another officer's password to search an NYPD database for personal reasons.

She lost 10 days of vacation because of the incident.

Records show Cancel earned $156,311 in fiscal year 2023, about $52,000 of which was in overtime pay.

Cancel joined the military in 2004 at age 35 after years of working at a securities firm. he told WNYC at the time.

She was assigned to Midtown South and was one of 12,000 police officers assigned to the Republican National Convention to combat potential terrorism.
