A Hawaiian animal lover who lost his home and several pets in the summer's deadly Maui wildfires received a call this week from a local animal rescue group saying they had found a fur baby. I was contacted. But the animal waiting at her shelter was not the person she expected.
The Maui Humane Society called the woman, identified only as Anna, and said they believed they had found her cat. said in a social media post. Monday.
But in a shocking twist, the orange kitten they rescued from the street was not one of the beloved cats Anna and her husband lost in the devastating fire.
Instead, it was his cat, Hissy, who had been missing for nearly three years, well before the August fire.
“Before they lose everything, [the] Hissy had been missing for nearly two years due to a fire that destroyed her family's home,” the Maui Humane Society said. “Anna and local cat catchers searched tirelessly for him, but unfortunately he was never found.”
Anna and her husband couldn't believe it when they got the call from the Maui Humane Society's cat annex that they had finally found and rescued Hissy, rescuers said.
“In an instant, Anna and her husband were able to drop everything and go straight to the annex, where they could share the emotional embrace they had been waiting for,” it reads.
The tabby cat and his 'ohana were reunited just hours after arriving at the annex.

“The moment they arrived, Hissy recognized them immediately, even though they had been separated for a long time,” the Maui Humane Society said in a statement.
Rescuers shared a heartwarming photo of Anna holding Hissy close to her face in a touching hug.
Unfortunately, Anna and her husband are still evacuated and living in a hotel after the fire. A friend of the couple then offered to take in the sweet orange tabby until a more permanent home could be found.
The Maui Humane Society also helped reunite Anna with another fur baby, a cat named Min Min, shortly after the fire.
But Min Min was just one of many cats the couple lost in the devastating fire. The rescue group said they are working to reunite Anna with her other cats.
