US intelligence warns Hezbollah may target mainland US amid war in Israel

U.S. intelligence officials said Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon could target Americans in the Middle East or even on the U.S. mainland.

U.S. officials have warned that the risk of terrorist attacks has increased since Israel's war with Hamas began. Politico reports that Hezbollah has begun to play a larger role in the conflict, leading to the possibility of serious attacks.

“Hezbollah will be able to use the capabilities they have to detain people.” [in] “It's a place to do something. That's concerning,” one U.S. intelligence official told the outlet.

Israel and Hezbollah spent the new year exchanging threats about broader war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country is not seeking war with Hezbollah, but will do whatever it takes to ensure Israel's security.

“Hezbollah made a grave mistake about us in 2006 and is doing the same thing now. We are looking to see if there is any,” Netanyahu said while visiting soldiers on the northern border. “We see tremendous strength here, national unity and a determination to do whatever it takes to bring security back to the North. I say this is my policy.”

“Obviously we hope that there will be no major conflict, but that won't stop us,” he added. “We have given Hezbollah an example of what happened to our friends in the south, and it will happen here in the north. We will do whatever it takes to restore security.”

President Biden's administration is trying to prevent Israel's war against Hamas from escalating into a regional conflict. Nevertheless, Iranian proxy terror groups have carried out more than 100 attacks against US and Israeli targets since October.
