World Economic Forum to kick off in Davos, Switzerland with global elites likely to face flak over private jet

Clara Maria Schenck, an activist with Greenpeace International, said in a statement ahead of the conference: “Europe continues to experience the warmest January days on record, and communities around the world are experiencing climate change. “We are dealing with extreme weather conditions that have been exacerbated by the crisis.”

“Meanwhile, the rich and powerful gather in Davos on polluting and socially inequitable private jets to debate climate and inequality behind closed doors,” she continued.

Such studies have found that between 1,000 and 1,500 private jets traveled to all surrounding airports near Davos during past WEF summits.

In 2019, the WEF responded to criticism, acknowledging that participants that year flew around 500 jets to the summit, but saying participants were “taking the environmental impact of travel more seriously.” Ta.

In a January 2019 statement, the WEF said: “Over the past few years, we have provided incentives for participants to use public transportation,” adding, “We also encourage participants to use public transportation if they absolutely have to fly. “We also ask people to carpool on planes, which has become increasingly popular in recent years.” . ”
