Rep. Wesley Hunt refuses to apologize when a black man screams at him for supporting Trump: ‘How can a black man do this?’

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) on Monday refused to apologize for supporting Donald Trump when a fellow Black man accused him of “degrading” him.

Hunt was speaking to Iowa caucus participants in the school's gymnasium when a man near the entrance to the gymnasium attacked a Republican lawmaker who cited his race in a speech supporting the Trump campaign. I got in the way.

“How can a black person stand here and talk about being racist?!” the man yelled at Hunt. “How could a black man do this on Martin Luther King Jr. Day?”

The crowd booed the man, accusing him of “degrading” himself by supporting the former president and “turning his back” on his fellow black Americans. Eventually, a group of men in the crowd forcibly removed a man who continued to shout opposition to Hunt's decision to support Trump.

Mr Hunt later responded to the incident on social media.

“Tonight, as I was speaking on behalf of President Trump at the Timberline caucus, an irate man tried to stop me from speaking. He said Trump was a 'racist.' You know, the same disgusting metaphor we've heard over and over again,'' Hunt said. “But this is Martin Luther King Day, and just like President Trump, the people of Iowa will judge me by the content of my character, not the color of my skin.

“The anti-Trump movement is seriously collapsing,” he added.

Hunt is a freshman lawmaker representing a majority-white district in Houston. Mr. Hunt is not ignorant of the fact that he looks different than most voters, but one of his core principles is that what makes America great is what stratifies us. It transcends the identity markers of the world.

“A lot of black people, a lot of people in general, think that their black identity is the most important thing. To me, that's like number 10,” Hunt said. Said Last year's Wall Street Journal. “I want to get to the point where I just stop talking about this at all.”

That spirit was on full display after Monday's suspension.

“When you walk in a room like this, you don't see race, religion, color, creed,” Hunt said. “I believe that my fellow Americans must come together in the fight to save our country.”
