Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin has been charged with manslaughter in connection with a shooting incident on a movie set near Santa Fe, New Mexico, in October 2021.
A grand jury indicted Baldwin after previous charges were dropped in April.
Prosecutors said new analysis results from the gun fired in the shooting led to new charges against Baldwin. That analysis says the trigger must have been pulled or depressed for the weapon to fire, contradicting Baldwin's claims.
“The trigger was not pulled. I did not pull the trigger. I would never, ever, ever point a gun at someone and pull the trigger,” Baldwin said in his first public interview since the shooting. ” he said.
Halina Hutchins, a 42-year-old cinematographer who was working on the film, was injured in the shooting and died. Manager Joel Souza (48) was also injured, but his injuries were minor. Baldwin was the lead actor, co-producer and screenwriter of the film Rust.
Investigators said in October 2021 that crew members said they did not check the gun for all rounds before handing it to the actors for on-set rehearsals.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said, “The facts are clear: Mr. Baldwin was given a weapon, the weapon functioned, and fired live ammunition, killing Mr. Hutchins and wounding Mr. Souza.” .
Manslaughter charges in New Mexico can result in up to 18 months in prison.
Baldwin has been very vocal about his left-wing political leanings and his hatred of former President Donald Trump, which he often portrayed on “Saturday Night Live.” The 65-year-old has also mocked and mocked various conservatives and other right-wingers through his social media accounts.
