On Friday's broadcast of HBO's “Real Time,” author Andrew Sullivan said that since the 1960s, we have made incredible progress on equality through freedom, free markets, and traditional liberal principles. He said we shouldn't completely mess things up with things like diversity, equity, and equality. He introduced DEI programs and “imposed strict quotas and tried to make everything perfect, while at the same time making our discourse toxic and really pissing people off.”
Sullivan said, “DEI isn't about expanding opportunity. It's about systematically discriminating based on race and gender.”
MSNBC host and chief legal correspondent Ari Melber then asked Sullivan why he thought the current system perfectly implemented meritocracy.
Sullivan said, “Because we've had civil rights laws since the '60s, and through free societies, free markets, and liberal principles, people have become more competent, more visible, more believable across a variety of fields. Because we've made more progress than ever. We should now be ruining this by imposing strict quotas and trying to make everything perfect, while at the same time poisoning our discourse and really pissing people off. No. One thing we know about DEI sessions and DEI programs is that they make people more racist. We've seen study after study showing this. .”
