Brock Purdy leads heroic late drive, 49ers stop Packers in final minute to clinch trip to NFC title game

If you ask San Francisco 49ers fans, their season would be a failure without the Super Bowl.

There were about 60 seconds left until the end of the season, but the former Mr. Irrelevant quarterback stepped up in the most important period of the season.

The 49ers fought back from a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Green Bay Packers 24-21 and earn a spot in the NFC Championship.

Green Bay missed a field goal to increase their lead by seven points, giving the Niners the ball from their own 31 with 6:18 remaining. Brock Purdy, who had been missing throws all night, drove hard, completing six of seven passes (the one missed was a George Kittle drop), and the last one was Christian McCaffrey's six. This was more than enough time as I finished with a score of . The second outing of the night gave San Francisco a 24-21 lead with 1:07 left.

The Packers, the youngest team in the league, took all three timeouts, but after the first one, Jordan Love threw with a run across the body. This was a huge failure. Dre Greenlaw picked it up and it was almost over. Purdy took a knee and led the clock to triple zero, sending his team to its fourth NFC Championship Game in five years.

Ravens have great second half against Texas and advance to AFC title game

Green Bay took the lead with a field goal and came within a pick of double-digit scoring, but Darnell Savage missed the ball. To make matters worse, the Packers failed to convert on fourth down (in a questionable position) and the Niners responded with a 12-play drive that ended with Purdy finding Kittle for a 32-yard score. Green Bay made another field goal in the second quarter, and San Fran tried to match it, but the field goal tipped over the line and the game remained 7-6 at halftime.

Deebo Samuel was sidelined at halftime with a shoulder injury, and the Niners felt his absence keenly during a three-and-out to start the first half. A costly third and long penalty forced the Packers into the red zone, and Love found Beau Melton in the end zone and took advantage, taking a 13-7 lead. The Niners responded with a 39-yard rushing touchdown by McCaffrey, but the Pack called back.

Green Bay stole the kickoff (after recovering its own fumble) after 20 teams, then Love set up Tucker Craft for a touchdown. Their successful two-point conversion made it 21-14 late in the third.

However, that was the last time Green Bay would score, as San Fran outscored the Pack 10-0 in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind victory.

Purdy had his ups and downs, but completed 23-of-39 passes for 252 passing yards, while McCaffrey rushed for 98 yards on 17 carries, including two touchdowns.

The magic carpet journey is over for Green Bay, but their future certainly looks bright after making the playoffs as a No. 7 seed and getting much closer to the NFC Championship Game.

Meanwhile, the Niners will host the winner of Sunday's Lions-Buccaneers game next Sunday in the NFC Championship.
