Author Andrew Sullivan told MSNBC host Ari Melber to his face on Friday that he works for a propaganda company.
During a lengthy discussion on Bill Maher's HBO show “Real Time” about the importance of Donald Trump's political resurgence, Sullivan discussed how the Democratic Party's reaction to Trump is eroding American democracy. observed.
“What the Democratic Party has done over the last four years, responding to President Trump by moving further to the left, means we are losing legitimacy in the system,” Sullivan said. “When we lose our core legitimacy, we lose our democracy. And that’s exactly where we lose our democracy, because we no longer believe in it.
Sullivan said the left's overreaction has led Americans to distrust “all institutions” and support “strong men” like Trump. Therefore, Sullivan predicted that Trump will defeat President Joe Biden in November.
In response, Melber told Sullivan that she was making a “fair point” but criticized her for sounding “a little bit on both sides.”
The MSNBC host acknowledged there was a problem with Democrats' “overreaction to Trump,” but Melber was quick to absolve them, insisting there was “no parity here.” He explained:
There's no two-sidedness about this decline and what Trump is doing — and I agree that sometimes he might draw his opponents into nasty, stupid feuds — but he's a cynic. , attacks on democracy, and counting on attacks on democracy. They completely rejected the policy democracy you want because they didn't even have a platform. That's why he says it's just me. You don't even know what I'm going to do. Please vote for me. There is no platform. And the entire Republican Party has basically codified that.
Sullivan said Melber's reaction is indicative of exactly the problems at television networks like MSNBC, Melber's employer.
“What's good about MSNBC is that we can actually consider both sides, weigh the arguments, and have a constructive discussion with both sides while respecting them.” said Sullivan.
“We don't do that, it's always propaganda!” he shouted.
Sullivan's observation clearly struck a nerve with Melber, who denied it was true. And to be fair, Melber does have a lot of Republicans and Trump supporters on his show.
But in the eyes of most Americans, Sullivan's point applies to MSNBC and most traditional media. Trust in the media remains near record lows. This is why alternative media such as independent journalism, podcasts and subscription-based models are overtaking traditional media.
