Trump has favorability edge with these key voter groups in swing districts as 2024 race heats up

Former President Donald Trump is viewed more favorably than President Biden among potential suburban and independent voters in 2024 battleground states, according to a new poll.

Only 29% of both voter groups approved of Biden's performance, while 60% of likely independent voters and 63% of likely suburban voters disapproved of the 81-year-old president.

The candidates are close in all races surveyed, with 45% of voters supporting Trump, 44% supporting Biden, and 11% undecided.

Notably, neither Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s independent candidacy nor replacing Trump with another Republican would improve Biden's standing among voters.

If RFK Jr. entered the race, 41% of voters in battleground states would still support Trump, 37% would vote for Biden, and 11% would vote for Kennedy.

Republican candidates other than Trump are tied with Biden at 40% each, and the number of undecided voters increases to 21%. Nikki Haley, the No. 2 leading Republican candidate, did not appear in the poll.

“Without Trump on the ballot, turnout will likely be lower,” said Brock McCleary, vice president of polling at Signal. “In other words, if Mr. Trump doesn't vote, he means the Republican Party has more to lose than to gain.”

The poll also shows that Republicans have greater confidence in likely voters in battleground races, with several New York congressional districts flipped by rookie Republicans in 2022. It is more likely that it will remain red.

A typical Republican candidate has a two-point advantage over Democrats among all voters in battleground districts, a one-point advantage among suburban voters, and a 10-point advantage among independent voters.

A majority of voters trust Republicans (56%) more than Democrats (26%) when it comes to border security, and their double-digit lead holds among independents, Hispanic voters, and suburban voters.

Also, more people (46%) believe that Republicans can do a better job of tackling crime and inflation than Democrats (31%) (45% vs. 36%).

Nearly three in 10 (29%) voters in battleground states said inflation would be their top issue in the 2024 election.

But the battleground state is at odds with Republicans on the issue of abortion, with nearly half (49%) viewing Republican candidates as more extreme than Democrats.
