First appearance on Fox: House Republicans formally announced their support for Taiwan's newly elected president on Thursday, a move likely to galvanize Beijing's ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

In a letter sent to President-elect Lai Kiyonori and signed by six Republican members of Congress, the United States vowed to help the island withstand China's “pressure” as China continues its aggressive campaign against its Southeast Asian neighbors. he accused.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to your country on its victory in the recent Taiwanese presidential election. We once again demonstrated our strength,” the U.S. lawmakers wrote.

“Strengthening the U.S.-Taiwan relationship remains one of our top priorities, especially in light of China's increasing aggressiveness.”

While Lai's selection by Taiwanese voters was not unexpected, it remains a rebuke to Chinese President Xi Jinping and his goal of “unifying” the two territories.

Taiwan's independence has also become a flashpoint in tensions between the United States and China, particularly over Taiwan's booming semiconductor industry.

Semiconductors are critical components of a wide variety of electronic devices, from smartphones to satellites to bank ATMs.

“We look forward to working with you and your administration to advance our partnership and support Taiwan from rampant diplomatic, economic, and military pressure from Beijing,” U.S. lawmakers wrote to Lai on Thursday. I'm looking forward to it.”

The two leaders also congratulated incoming Vice President Hsiao Bi-jin, who previously served as Taiwan's Chief of Mission to the United States.

Lai is in favor of maintaining strong ties between Taiwan and the United States, but there is no formal diplomatic relationship due to the United States' “One China” policy, which only recognizes the Chinese government.
