Arizona Republican Party Chairman Jeff DeWitt resigned Wednesday amid growing controversy over Kali Lake, secret recordings and bribery allegations.
in explosive recording In Tuesday's publication, DeWitt told Lake there are “very powerful people” who are willing to pay her not to run for the Senate in 2024. During her recording, DeWitt speaks in vague terms, but at one point she makes her request clear. She said DeWitt asked Lake to ask if powerful people in the “back east” could cancel their political plans for large sums of money.
But Ms. Lake has repeatedly protested, claiming that even $1 billion “will never buy” her money because it is “immoral.”
In a statement announcing his resignation, DeWitt accused Lake of releasing a “selectively edited” 10-minute recording of a private conversation that took place at Lake's home about a year ago. blamed Mr.
“I said something I regret, but when I heard Lake's recording, I realized I had been set up,” DeWitt said. Suspect. “I believe that she orchestrated this entire situation in order to control the state party, and that she engineered the performance reactions knowing that she was recording them and later used this recording. It is clear from the recording that she intended to portray herself as a hero in her own story. ”
DeWitt explained early Wednesday that he is “determined to fight” for his job. However, he changed his mind when Lake's team allegedly threatened him.
”[A] “A few hours ago, I received an ultimatum from Lake's team: resign today or face the release of new recordings that are more damaging,” he claimed, adding, “As for the content… I have no idea, but given the many open conversations we've had as friends, I've decided not to take the risk. ”
This confession raises worrying questions. Given that he's already been charged with trying to bribe Lake on behalf of an unknown group of power brokers, could Lake have recorded something “more damaging” than that? ?
Meanwhile, Lake's team denied threatening DeWitt.
“No one from the Kali Lake camp threatened or blackmailed DeWitt,” they said in a statement. “It is unfortunate that Mr. DeWitt does not recognize how unethical his actions were and has yet to apologize to the Arizona Republican Party. Mr. DeWitt's false claims are no surprise. Arizona Republicans must be relieved that he's stepping down so we can focus on getting ethical leadership and winning big in 2024. ”
Still, more questions remain. If the tape is as damaged as it appears, why did Lake wait nearly a year to release it? And of course, how many other recordings does Lake have?
