Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) and several New York Republican lawmakers on Friday urged Gov. Kathy Hochul to follow in the footsteps of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott amid a surge in illegal immigration from Canada. It called for immediate steps to be taken to secure the northern border.
In a letter to Empire governors, Stefanik and others told Hochul that she was among 25 state governors who signed a joint statement Thursday supporting Abbott's efforts to secure the southern border. He said he was “shocked” that there was no name. The immigration crisis has hit New York.
“As record numbers of illegal immigrants cross our border into New York, your refusal to change course is creating an unsustainable environment that is causing financial and humanitarian harm to our state.” says the letter.
“In light of the influx of illegal immigrants into New York, we urge you to work to secure our northern border and support Texas Governor Greg Abbott's efforts to do the same at our southern border. “We urge you to support us,” New York state lawmakers said. “With Joe Biden and Alejandro Mayorkas refusing to act, it is past time for governors to take decisive action to protect our people and our country.”
In their call for swift action, Stefanik and his allies note: 91,640 migrants encountered by U.S. Border Patrol Last year, Iranian nationals with unspecified “terrorist ties” were arrested in the Swanton and Buffalo areas along the New York-Canada border as they tried to illegally enter the United States near Niagara Falls.
Lawmakers also noted that New York City has already spent $2 billion on housing and caring for the record number of immigrants that will overwhelm the Big Apple under the Biden administration, and that the city plans to increase spending on immigrants by the end of 2025. It also highlights that the company is forecasting $12 billion.
Earlier this week, Hochul and eight other Democratic governors called for federal action against immigrantsin a letter to President Biden and Congressional leaders, described the influx of migrants from the southern border as a “humanitarian crisis.”
On Tuesday, the governor announced a record $233 billion state budget for fiscal year 2025, including $2.4 billion for New York City's immigration crisis.
Meanwhile, Texas has invoked Abbott's Lone Star State claim. “Our constitutional right to protect and defend our nation’s southern border.”
His strategy to combat the immigration border, which the Biden administration claims is unconstitutional, includes installing razor wire and floating fencing along hot spots of illegal entry points and allowing state authorities to arrest illegal border crossers.・Includes signing a bill that allows people to go to jail and transporting tens of thousands of people by bus. The number of asylum seekers in so-called “sanctuary cities.”
The Supreme Court ruled earlier this week that federal authorities had the right to breach Abbott's razor wire fence.
Governors opened up after installing more, prompting expressions of support from half of the nation's governors, all of them Republicans.
“Far-leftist Kathy Hochul has openly admitted that because of Joe Biden's disastrous open border policies, New York taxpayers can't afford to continue subsidizing illegal immigrants pouring through the border.” Stefanik told the Post. “She has the opportunity to stand here now with Governor Greg Abbott, who is working tirelessly to secure Texas' borders and protect our country from this invasion that Joe Biden has so unacceptably encouraged. ”
“Kathy Hochul has a duty to ensure the safety and security of all New Yorkers, and right now she is woefully failing in that duty.”
Reps. Nick Langworthy, Nicole Malliotakis, Brandon Williams, Claudia Tenney, Nick Larota, Mark Molinaro, Mike Lawler, and Anthony D'Esposito also joined Stefanik in signing the letter. .
