United Auto Workers (UAW) President Sean Fein fired back Tuesday after former President Donald Trump called union leaders who support President Biden “narcotics.”
When asked about Trump’s recent comments on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Fein doubled down on his support for Biden, calling out Biden and Trump’s record of supporting unions and the working class. showed a remarkable contrast.
“The two candidates are complete opposites,” Fein said. “So for the first time in history, a sitting president of the United States joined working-class people, joined the workers on the picket lines, and stood with them. There’s Trump, he calls one of his friends who is a manager at a non-union factory, goes to that non-union factory and holds a rally claiming he’s here for the union workers. We are opening for striking workers.”
“That’s what Mr. Trump does best. It’s rope-a-dope,” Fein continued. “He wants you to look over here, but over here he’s taking everything. So this is a divide-and-conquer strategy, one that has worked forever for the billionaire class and the corporate class. It is.”
Fein last week endorsed Biden’s re-election campaign in support of his bid for the White House. He said the UAW supported Biden in 2020, but initially refrained from supporting Biden’s reelection bid, citing concerns about the administration’s push for electric vehicles.
Meanwhile, Mr. Trump is drawing attention to his expected rematch with Mr. Biden in the fall and is trying to gain support from blue-collar voters. In September, President Trump skipped a Republican primary debate to address autoworkers in Michigan, a key battleground state.
After Mr. Fein endorsed Mr. Biden and rebuked Mr. Trump last week, Mr. Fein attacked the union leader on social media, calling for him to “get rid of this drug.”
In an appearance on MSNBC on Tuesday, Fein doubled down on his criticism of Trump as a representative of the “billionaire class,” referring to tax reform passed under the Trump administration in 2017 that included “working class It claimed that it contained “minor benefits” to “people.” He also accused President Trump of pushing for cuts to social welfare programs.
“Labour is going to lead this fight and we are in it,” Mr Fain said. “Our members have to look at the reality. We have to look at the facts. That’s why our contract campaign has been so successful. This is because it has brought to light the reality of gross inequality, and the same is true in our politics.
“There are deep inequalities where a few people are at the top and everyone else is at the bottom. We have to look at the facts, not the fiction, not the alternative facts and lies that President Trump likes to tell. It must be. And the facts are very clear.”
