Two NYPD officers were assaulted Saturday night as they tried to disperse a disorderly crowd outside an immigrant shelter.
The group of men were first told by a police officer and lieutenant to leave the front of the Candler Building at 220 West 42nd Street. The building has been used as a shelter since March last year because the homeless shelter was overcrowded.
A scuffle soon broke out, with several men kicking and punching the officer “in the head and body,” according to the report. One of the officers suffered severe cuts to his face, and medical personnel at the scene helped him recover.
The four suspects initially arrested after the incident were identified as Darwin Andres Gomez Izquiel, 19, Kevin Servato Alchoa, 19, Juarez Wilson, 21, and Yeoman Rebellon, 24.
All four were charged with assault after being taken into custody, but were later released under the state’s sanctuary law.
One of them, Rebellon, had been arrested on two separate occasions. He was accused of assaulting a Nordstrom Rack employee who tried to stop a theft in November. He was also charged with “beating a Macy’s employee” who tried to stop him and two others during a planned robbery at the Herald Square store last month.
A fifth suspect in the immigrant mob incident was subsequently arrested on Monday. He was identified as 22-year-old Joan Boada. Boada was initially charged with attempted assault on a police officer, but was arraigned and released late Wednesday.
Patrick Hendry, chairman of the Police Benevolent Association, released a statement after learning of the attack, claiming that police assault was becoming an “epidemic”.
“Assaults on police officers are becoming an epidemic, and the reason for this is the revolving door that we see in incidents like this,” Mr Hendry said. “It is impossible for police officers to effectively combat crime and disorder if the justice system cannot or will not protect us.”
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that she is considering deporting a group of immigrant men.
“I think that’s something that should really be considered. I mean, if someone commits a crime against a police officer in New York state, and that person didn’t come here legally, it’s definitely worth looking into. ,” Hochul said. “It’s wrong on every count, and I expect the judge and prosecutors to do the right thing.”
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also log on to Crime Stoppers and submit tips. Website@NYPDTips on Twitter.
