Mexican President Calls U.S. Government Immoral After Media Reports Point to Cartel Funding His Campaign

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has ordered news outlets to publish a series of exposés detailing how the Sinaloa cartel funneled millions of dollars into his failed 2006 presidential election. He lashed out at the US government, calling it immoral for allowing the three companies to do so.

Separate but related news articles, propublica, Insight Crime and the German Press GW.com We published separate articles by Tim Golden and Anabel Hernandez, each reporting on the DEA’s investigation into how the Sinaloa cartel funneled millions of dollars into López Obrador’s failed presidential bid. Criminal organizations poured cash into all of the candidates to hedge their bets and keep their friends in power regardless of the outcome.

In their report, Golden and Hernandez describe how the Sinaloa cartel, through executives in the Beltrán Leyva organization, including Edgar “La Barbie” Villarreal, provided between $2 million and $5 million in cash to López Obrador’s campaign. It provides a detailed explanation of how the money was sent. The publication’s information is consistent with witness testimony in the 2019 trial of Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, in which presidential campaigns, including AMLO’s, were funded. a key witness said, Breitbart Texas reported.

Hernández’s article claimed that López Obrador spoke directly to La Barbie on the phone to thank him for the donation and ask for his help in reducing violence after he was elected.

López Obrador ran for president a total of three times before winning a six-year term in 2018, losing the first two times. Mexico will hold the 2024 presidential election this summer, and the Morena party, founded by López Obrador, is one of the leading candidates.

On Tuesday, an irate López Obrador used a morning news conference to refute the claims, calling the article defamatory.

“I don’t blame journalists, I don’t blame news organizations,” López Obrador said. “I condemn the U.S. government for condoning these immoral acts.”

López Obrador dismissed the reports, saying they were a timed and orchestrated attack on him by opponents of the government at a time when Mexico’s political movement is in full swing.

López Obrador’s press secretary, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas, pointed to the coordination and timing of the report, adding there was no evidence the president was involved.
