There may finally be a breakthrough in the long-running investigation into the killing of a wild loggerhead in California’s Mojave Desert nearly five years ago, federal authorities announced Thursday.
On August 13, 2019, 19 burrows were found shot to death along the 50 mile stretch of Interstate 15 northeast of Los Angeles.

Wild donkeys are protected by federal law. They are also an iconic symbol of the American Southwest, dating back to the days when they were used as herd animals for people flocking to California during the Gold Rush.
The Bureau of Land Management said investigators would like to interview the owners of the two vehicles involved. One vehicle is a gray or silver 2008 Toyota extended cab pickup with flared fenders, and the other is a white 2008 Toyota extended cab pickup with a white camper shell and white rims.

The agency said in a statement that both pickup trucks were recorded on video traveling together on that section of the highway on the day of the killing and were last seen at Whiskey Pete’s Hotel in Primm, Nevada. It is said to have been in the parking lot of And Casino.
Investigators further determined that the weapon used to kill Barros was a .30-06 caliber rifle, “possibly vintage based on the rifling of the recovered projectile, with Browning, Remington, Spring Field Corporation, U.S. Ordnance Corporation, or Winchester,” the statement said.

“Special agents believe the person responsible used reloaded ammunition with red/orange paint on the bottom of the cartridge,” the agency said.
A $10,000 reward has been placed, and authorities are asking anyone with information on a possible suspect to contact the department.
