After months of negotiations, U.S. senators unveiled a $118 billion emergency national security supplemental spending bill on Sunday. The bill would provide $60 billion in aid to Ukraine and $20 billion to secure the U.S. southern border.

I never believed that policy demands should be tied to emergency aid to our allies, but because Republicans insisted, Democrats negotiated in good faith for weeks and now have a border policy bill. There is bipartisan agreement. The fate of Ukraine and much else is at stake. It’s time for Congress to act.

The border security bill would put a vast array of new enforcement tools in the hands of future administrations and encourage the current administration to finally stop illegal immigration. The bill would fund construction of a wall, improved technology at the border, more detention beds, more staff, and more deportation flights. The border security bill would end parole abuses at the Southwest border, where more than 1 million people have been exempted. This would dramatically change vague asylum laws by implementing expedited examinations with higher evidentiary standards, limited appeals, and expedited deportation.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (Democratic Party) Said“The Senate’s bipartisan agreement is a monumental step toward strengthening America’s national security overseas and along our borders. This is one of the most necessary and important bills we have ever introduced.”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was praised The bill is designed to provide “a direct and immediate solution to the crisis at our southern border.”
“America’s sovereignty is being tested here at home, and our credibility is being tested by bold adversaries around the world,” McConnell said.
