Former President Trump called it a “huge deal” and urged the Nevada Republican Party to sign a petition requiring voters to bring identification to the polls.
“There is a very important effort currently underway in Nevada to amend the state constitution to require voter ID. That can only happen if you sign the petition to place the voter ID amendment.” President Trump posts on his truth social site on Thursday.
“If you are attending the Nevada Republican Caucus today to vote, be sure to sign the voter ID petition that will be widely circulated at the caucus venue,” he continued. “This is a very ‘big deal’. Thank you.”
In November, the Nevada Republican PAC, Repair the Vote, amended the state constitution to require voters to show photo identification at polling places, including a Nevada driver’s license number or social identification card. filed a ballot initiative to add additional identification documents, such as Security number, for mail-in voting. Voters filed a lawsuit to block the next election initiative.
If the new law passes, Nevada’s voting laws would be among the strictest in the nation. According to the complaint Retrieved by Las Vegas Review-Journal.
PAC Chairman David Gibbs attempted to launch the initiative in 2022, but it failed after a judge challenged the wording of the amendment. The outlet reported.
The group also proposed another unsuccessful voting bill that would have abolished universal mail-in voting and established local ballot collection. Democracy Papers reports.
Under state requirements, the PAC must obtain signatures from 10% of voters who participated in the most recent general election. According to Ballotpedia, the amendment would require more than 102,000 signatures on the fall ballot. Of the total number of signatures required, 25% must be signed from each of his four congressional districts in Nevada.
Republican voters in Nevada will have two chances to go to the polls this week, with former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley appearing in the Republican primary and President Biden appearing in Tuesday’s Democratic primary. Trump will be the only major candidate to appear on Thursday’s Nevada caucus ballot.
