Utah National Guard helicopter involved in ‘training accident’; 2 pilots injured

A Utah Army National Guard helicopter crashed on Monday in what authorities are calling a “training accident,” injuring the two pilots on board.

The Utah Army National Guard said the accident involved an AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopter, which crashed at the West Jordan Army Air Support Facility around 1:20 p.m.

The two pilots on board the plane at the time survived and are receiving treatment at a hospital. They were finally reported to be in stable condition. No deaths or other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

One of the pilots was a senior instructor and an experienced pilot. FOX13 Salt Lake City report.

Photos from the scene show that the helicopter appeared to be heavily damaged in the crash, but authorities have not yet confirmed the extent of the damage.

Officials did not immediately provide additional details about the training exercise or the cause of the crash.

The AH-64D is a helicopter used primarily for attack and reconnaissance, Lt. Col. Chris Clover told a local broadcaster.

Five Marines killed in California helicopter crash identified

A team from the Army Combat Readiness Center is scheduled to begin investigating the helicopter accident on Tuesday. Officials said the investigation could take up to 90 days to complete.

The helicopter accident occurred nearly a week after five U.S. Marines were killed when their helicopter crashed during a routine training flight during a storm in the mountains outside San Diego.

The crew was aboard a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter departing from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada en route to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar near San Diego when it crashed on the night of February 6.
