California suspected gang members arrested after killing 4 in a series of Los Angeles shootings

Two suspected gang members have been arrested in connection with a series of shootings near Los Angeles that left four people dead, including a 14-year-old boy, authorities said Tuesday.

The shootings occurred over several hours late Sunday and early Monday in Huntington Park, Bell, Cudahy and Los Angeles cities, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators do not have a motive, but believe all the victims were targeted at random and did not know the suspects, Sheriff’s Homicide Lt. Andrew Meyer told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

“This appears to have been a random homicide, but homicide investigators have not ruled anything out,” Meyer said.

Detectives were investigating a possible third male suspect, but authorities did not release further details. Officials said there was no ongoing threat to the public.

A man was found dead around 10:30 p.m. Sunday after police responded to a report of a shooting in Bell City, just southeast of downtown Los Angeles, Meyer said. Just after midnight on Monday, another man was shot and killed in a shopping center parking lot in Los Angeles.

Less than 15 minutes later, there were reports that two boys had been shot in nearby Cudahy. One of the victims, a 14-year-old boy, died at the scene, and the other boy was hospitalized in stable condition, officials said.

The fourth shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. in Huntington Park. The victim, whose body was found along a roadside curb, was a homeless man known to residents in the area, city police chief Cosme Lozano said.

Sheriff’s investigators identified the Honda Pilot as a possible suspect vehicle seen on surveillance video near the scene of the four shootings. A Honda was stopped on the side of the road Monday during a traffic stop in East Los Angeles, and San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested a 42-year-old man with an extensive criminal history, Meyer said.

The second suspect, a 20-year-old man with no criminal history, was arrested after SWAT officers executed a search warrant at a residence in Compton, officials said.

Both defendants are suspected of being gang members. Both men could each face murder charges, but authorities have not said whether they fired their weapons. No weapons were recovered.

Officials urged witnesses or anyone with information to call the Sheriff’s Office.
