Investigators Visit Graves of Dead Voters Still on Michigan Rolls

Investigators from the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) visited the graves of Americans who are on Michigan’s voter rolls for the 2024 election but have long since died.

In November 2021, PILF warned Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) that Michigan has nearly 26,000 deceased registrants on its voter rolls and that the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) He was accused of violating the law.

The complaint alleges that 25,975 deceased registrants remain on Michigan’s voter rolls, of which 23,663 have been dead for more than five years, 17,479 have been dead for more than 10 years, and 3,956 have died. He claims that at least 20 years have passed since then.

Video released by PILF this month shows the watchdog group visiting several cemeteries in Michigan, some of the Americans who died in the state while still registered to vote.

One such registrant was alive before World War I and would have been 110 years old today. Another died 25 years ago, the year former President Bill Clinton was impeached, and one of the registrants has not lived for 12 federal election cycles.

“Secretary Benson vehemently opposes our efforts to investigate the tens of thousands of registered deaths found on voter rolls,” PILF President J. Christian Adams said in a statement.

In August 2022, Benson asked the federal court to dismiss the PILF lawsuit, but the request was denied and the lawsuit continues.

“Federal law requires state election officials to have a reasonable plan to remove dead voters. It is unreasonable to keep deceased voters on the rolls for 20 years,” Adams said. said.
