Nikki Haley said Saturday that former President Donald Trump is being called upon to respond following the death of Russia’s “hero” opposition leader Alexei A. Navalny.
She said the outspoken Mr. Navalny died at the hands of President Vladimir V. Putin and that her former boss, Mr. Trump, needed to “answer it.” new york times report.
In a call with reporters outside a rally in a park in Irmo, South Carolina, Haley praised Navalny, who accused President Putin of corruption and election fraud.
She said the Kremlin’s harsh critic had fled his native country and only returned “to fight the good fight.”

“Then he was arrested, and now President Putin did to him what he did to all of his opponents: he killed them,” she said of Trump, his rival in the Republican primary. said before criticizing.

Navalny, 47, has been branded a “terrorist and extremist” by the Russian government and has been convicted of several crimes, which he says are empty and politically motivated.
President Trump has yet to publicly comment on Navalny’s death.
