Russian authorities reportedly arrested a woman with dual U.S. and Russian citizenship on Tuesday.According to reports, authorities claim she was arrested on charges of treason for raising funds for the Ukrainian military. fox news digital.
Russia’s Federal Security Service in Yekaterinburg said it had “suppressed the illegal activities” of an unidentified 33-year-old woman. She is reportedly from Los Angeles.
Security officials went on to claim that the woman was “actively collecting funds…which were then used to purchase tactical medical supplies, equipment, means of destruction, and ammunition for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”
Russian authorities reportedly added that the woman had committed acts “against the security of our country” and had supported Ukrainian troops while in the United States. CBS News. If the woman is found guilty, she could face up to life in prison under Russian laws that have become stricter since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine.
The revelations come as the Russian government decides to extend the detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich after rejecting his attorney’s appeal in his case. Gershković was accused Espionage by the Russian Government for U.S. Interests
The journalist must now remain in prison in Russia until at least March 30, a full year since he was first arrested by Russian authorities.
Russia arrested several other Americans, including former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan. Mr Whelan has been imprisoned in Russia since 2018 and is currently serving a 16-year sentence on espionage charges.
According to reports, Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke by phone with Mr. Whelan last week. The United States claims Mr. Whelan was wrongfully detained.
