Two children have been killed after a mountainside collapses along a river in Northern California, which has been battered by a series of winter storms.
The two victims fell into debris Thursday morning on a hillside near an off-highway vehicle recreation area downstream from Shasta Dam, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

A large number of first responders, including the sheriff’s dive team, rushed to the scene about 200 miles (320 kilometers) north of San Francisco around 9 a.m., the statement said.
Dam management temporarily reduced water release from the dam, and the two victims were found in the rubble. According to police, the two people were pronounced dead at the scene.
It is not clear whether the victim fell into the water, as initial reports in local media indicated. He called a sheriff’s spokesperson Friday but did not immediately receive a response.
