Georgia House advances gun safety training tax credit, ban on gun store merchant category code

Another gun bill passed by the Georgia House on Tuesday would provide tax credits for the cost of gun safety training and gun safes, and another bill would allow financial institutions to differentiate between firearms retailers. The content prohibits the use of the code.

The tax credit bill received bipartisan support and passed the House by a vote of 162-3. There is a state income tax credit of up to $300 that can be used to pay for training and gun storage equipment.

But Democrats charged that the second bill banning the Seller Act would be a favor to gun control groups and make the state less safe.

Both bills now go to the state Senate for consideration.

Merchant category codes exist for almost every type of purchase, including purchases at supermarkets, clothing stores, coffee shops, and many other retail stores. Visa and other credit card companies announced they would adopt the International Organization for Standardization’s new Merchant Code for gun sales in 2022, but later put the decision on hold in the face of opposition from gun control advocates and conservative politicians. .

Republican state Rep. Jason Ridley, noting that ISO is based in Switzerland, said the code could be used to create a registry of gun sales.

“I don’t care what side of the firearm you stand on,” he said. “No one should know what you buy and keep on register, especially in a foreign country.”

Democratic Rep. Shea Roberts said the bill would give banks tools to detect fraud and law enforcement to find people stockpiling weapons in case of a potential mass shooting. He said it would take away the tools available to them.

“That’s what we’ve seen over and over again,” she said. “The gun control lobby trumps everything.”
