‘Hit the Hague, hit the bong!’ Hear Gregg Alexander’s original demo of Murder on the Dancefloor | Sophie Ellis-Bextor

IFormer New Radicals songwriter Greg Alexander spoke to Dave Simpson today in a highly unusual interview detailing the birth of the song that experienced a massive renaissance appreciation. Go to the place from the movie “Saltburn”. Unable to go out for a night in Detroit, he picked up an acoustic guitar in the backseat and started singing, “It’s murder on the dance floor, but you better not kill the groove.”

This was one of the lyrics used in Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s final recording of the song, and the demo included many others, including: “Don’t let us hit the hay.” I won’t!” – left on the floor of the cutting room. For the first time ever, you can hear that demo here, along with a message from Alexander.

“I’m an artist at heart, but I produced The Strokes for Tina Turner. Sophie inspired our new lyrics in an interview for New Rad’s ’90s Murder’s Rough Cassette.” As I said, instead of my dancing murder metaphor, “Let’s storm the Hague!” Then hit the bong! ” – Sophie also does a great retweet of the Murder cover – my bandmate Daniel [Brisebois] So we thought why not share a snippet of a rough track from a cassette that we sent to Sophie that includes most of the New Radicals’ “lost hits.” Without Sophie’s belief in this song and her pop brilliance, this song might never have been heard or known to the world. Enjoy – and eternal gratitude to Sophie Ellis-Bextor from New Radicals! ”
