Dozens of Democratic women wore white to President Biden’s State of the Union address on Thursday to raise awareness of “women’s rights,” including access to abortion and in vitro fertilization.
After the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in 2022 and more recently, several states moved to outlaw abortion following the Alabama High Court decision. The group and members of the pro-life group jointly organized the wearing of white clothes. Last month, a court ruled that children have rights in frozen embryos, threatening access to in vitro fertilization in the state.
“As the hours count down to President Biden’s State of the Union address, I joined my colleagues in the @DemWomenCaucus in white to symbolize our collective commitment to women’s rights,” said House Robin Kelly. Rep. (D-Illinois) wrote to X.
“We will never stop advocating for women, from reproductive rights to equality in the workplace,” she added.
Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), who is also in the exhibit, took aim at Trump-supporting Republicans when explaining her State of the Union fashion choices.
“MAGA Republicans will stop at nothing to control women’s bodies and reproductive health care, and together we must fight back.” she tweeted
Amanda Zulawski, a Texas woman who is suing the state after being denied an abortion despite her unborn child’s life-threatening condition, also joined House Minority Whip Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) on Thursday. He plans to wear white clothes as a guest of honor.
“Texas’ abortion ban nearly cost Amanda Zulawski her life,” Clark tweeted.
“Now, her ability to start a family is once again under attack with MAGA efforts to criminalize IVF,” she added.
“Amanda, thank you for coming to the Capitol to tell your story before the State of the Union.”

Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.) said the shade chosen was “suffrage white,” a nod to the women’s rights movement of the early 20th century.
“We defend the right to make one’s own health care decisions, including abortion.” she tweeted.
In 2019, several female members of Congress wore white to former President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, including Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Fla.).
