(NEXSTAR) — A National Guard helicopter crashed near the Texas-Mexico border Friday afternoon, killing at least two people, multiple law enforcement officials confirmed to Nexstar.
Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Chris Olivares confirmed the helicopter crashed in La Grulla, a small town in eastern Starr County on the Rio Grande River.
DPS South Texas Regional Director Victor Escalon told Nexstar that at least four people could be seriously injured. Escalon could not independently confirm any further information and directed inquiries to Customs and Border Protection.
Escalon said the helicopter was not part of Operation Lone Star, Texas’ unilateral border patrol force that utilizes the National Guard, but was “a military helicopter working with the Border Patrol at the direction of the federal government.” Stated.
DPS is assisting federal agencies with their response. According to KVEO.
