The Jets wanted a second chance to see what Chuck Clark had left in the tank.
Clark, a 96-game veteran, re-signed to a one-year contract Sunday on the eve of NFL free agency, the Post confirmed.
He suffered a torn ACL in spring OTAs and missed all of last season, so even if another team bids, it’s unlikely there will be a big market for him.
Re-signing the 28-year-old Clarke protects against the possibility of losing Jordan Whitehead in free agency.
Whitehead started all 34 games over two seasons with the Jets on a $14.5 million contract and had three of his six interceptions in last season’s memorable Week 1 win over the Bills. , including Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending Achilles tendon tear and Xavier Gipson’s walk. Off punt return touchdown.
The Jets originally acquired Clark last offseason, trading a seventh-round pick to the Ravens to play alongside Whitehead.
He was a starter in the last four of his six seasons with the Ravens, totaling five interceptions and five forced fumbles, and was the head coach after receiving play calls from coordinator Wink Martindale. I put on the set and transmitted the signal.
Tony Adams, one of the Jets’ few bright spots last season, was selected as a returning starter at one of the safety spots. The undrafted free agent signed had 82 tackles and three interceptions in 15 starts.
Most estimated ACL recovery timelines allow Clark to return to the field in plenty of time before training camp.

The Jets could still re-sign Whitehead or fellow in-house free agent Ashton Davis or look for a safe spot in free agency, but their main needs are on the offensive side of the ball.
Davis’ main value is on special teams, where he played 217 defensive snaps last season.
