Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his government on Sunday that international leaders pushing for elections in the midst of a war are trying to “paralyze the country” and force Israel to stop fighting and lose the war. Ta.
Prime Minister Netanyahu did not explicitly mention President Joe Biden by name, but on Thursday U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) made an alarming announcement that he called for new elections in Israel to oust Prime Minister Netanyahu. He made the remarks after Biden endorsed his speech on Friday.
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s full statement, translated and provided by the Israeli Government Press Office, is below (emphasis added):
Since the war began, we have fought on two fronts: military and diplomatic.
Diplomatically, we have successfully engaged our forces in an unprecedented manner for five full months. However, it is no secret that international pressure is mounting.
There are people in the international community who are trying to stop the war now, before all of its objectives are achieved. They do so by hurling false accusations against the Israel Defense Forces, the Israeli government, and the Israeli Prime Minister.
They are doing so through efforts to hold elections now in the midst of war. They are doing this because they know that if they hold an election now, the war will stop and the country will be paralyzed for at least six months.
And let me be clear: If we stop the war now before all of its objectives have been achieved, that means Israel will lose the war, and we will not tolerate that. Therefore, we cannot and will not succumb to this pressure.
On the contrary, this simple truth only strengthens our resolve to buck the pressure, keep fighting to the end and aim for complete victory. International pressure will not prevent us from achieving the full objectives of the war: to eliminate Hamas, free all hostages, and ensure that Gaza never again poses a threat to Israel.
To do this, we work with Rapha. This is the only way to eliminate the Hamas murder brigades and the only way to exert the military pressure necessary to free all the hostages.
To this end, we have approved an operational plan for action in Rafah, including advancing measures to evacuate civilians from the combat area. This is an important step before military action.
Those who say there will be no action in Rafah are also the same people who said we would not enter Gaza, we would not take action in Shifa or Khan Yunis, and we would not resume fighting after a lull.
Therefore, I repeat: we operate with Rapha. This will take a few weeks, but it will happen.
To my friends in the international community, I say this. Is your memory that short? Have we so quickly forgotten October 7th, the most horrifying massacre of Jews since the Holocaust? Are you so quick to deny Israel the right to protect itself from the monster of Hamas? Have you suddenly lost your moral conscience?
Instead of putting pressure on Israel, which is waging war with unparalleled justice against an unparalleledly brutal enemy, we should put pressure on Hamas and its patron Iran. It is they who pose a danger to this region and the whole world.
In any case, we will withstand any pressure and with the help of G-d, we will continue to fight together until complete victory.
On Saturday night, thousands of people marched in Tel Aviv demanding new elections, joined by those marching for a deal to release Israeli hostages, in the largest anti-government protests since the start of the war. .
Prime Minister Netanyahu also announced that an Israeli negotiating team led by Mossad chief David Balnea will return to Doha, Qatar, and take hostages, including women, the elderly and the sick, in exchange for a pause in the war and the release of many convicted Palestinians. He also spoke when discussing Hamas’ proposal to release him. End the war with the second phase of releasing hostages in addition to the terrorists who killed Israelis.
Israel said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Hamas’ proposal as “unrealistic” but that negotiations would continue. The White House has been more receptive, with national security spokesman John Kirby telling reporters on Friday that Hamas’ offer was “within range” of the U.S. proposal and clearly accepting an end to the war before Hamas’ defeat. said.
