Star power is back in college basketball — and no, we’re not talking about Caitlin Clark. While the Iowa State women’s superstars remain the biggest names in the sport, the men’s side also has some great talent.
After the recent retirements of legends like Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams and Jay Wright, new coaching stars are emerging in the sport.danny hurley’s university university The Huskies entered the national championship game as a No. 5 seed a year ago, but they look even better this year. Not since Billy Donovan’s Florida Gators in 2006-2007 has a men’s team won back-to-back national titles. UConn is the favorite to enter the tournament, but the path to a Final Four berth with Phoenix won’t be easy.
Purdue center Zach Eady has been a dominant force over the past two years. He is trying to become the first men’s college basketball player to become the nation’s best player for the second consecutive year since Ralph Sampson of the University of Virginia more than 40 years ago. Eday’s Boilermakers face more pressure than any other team in America as they enter this tournament with the No. 1 seed next to their name. A year ago, the Boilermakers lost to No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson in the opening game and are looking for revenge.
Now that the brackets for the 2024 Men’s NCAA Tournament have been announced, let’s take a quick look at how the field will play out.
eastern region
The East goes through UConn, the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Huskies could have a formidable second-round matchup against Florida Atlantic, who played in last year’s Final Four, and would likely defeat Northwestern to advance to the Round of 32. Still, expect the Huskies to advance to the Sweet 16 and beyond.
San Diego State was also a Final Four team in the region last year. The Aztecs are currently the No. 5 seed and are ripe for an upset, but they should be good enough to beat UAB in the opener. SEC Tournament champion Auburn is the No. 4 seed and will have a tough matchup against a disciplined Yale team. I’m concerned about the Tigers’ guard play, so I plan on defeating San Diego State and advancing to the Sweet 16. We’re going to beat UConn over SDSU to get into the Elite Eight.
take over drake State of Washington In a 7-10 upset. Tucker DeVries and his Co. have been on the brink of making a March Madness breakthrough for years, and this year they finally did it. The second-place upset will move Drake to the Sweet 16. iowa Although the Cyclones are doing well in terms of metrics, they are only 55th in offensive power due to a severe lack of three-point shots. So the Bulldogs have a great chance going into their second weekend. Looking for another upset in the region? Look to LeBron James’ high school coach Keith Dambrot to lead Duquesne to an opening-round victory.
Drake’s run came to an end against a strong Illinois team that could have scored anyone. The Illini are finally in their second weekend under coach Brad Underwood, making it all the way to the Elite Eight. We beat the University of Illinois to advance to the Final Four. Danny Hurley’s team has checked all the boxes for a national championship, and this is the first step to winning the region.
southern region
Let’s start here with the best first round game, James Madison vs. Wisconsin. The Badgers just defeated Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament, but the Dukes have also played unbelievably and are on a 13-game winning streak. Let’s pull off a 12-5 upset over the Dukes. They don’t stop there. After Duke defeated Vermont in the first round, the Blue Devils’ losing streak ended at James Madison. Dukes ahead of Duke to reach Sweet 16. Duke will have to wait until next year, when Cooper Flagg & Company will move in.
north carolina The Wolfpack had a Cinderella run, winning the ACC Tournament and posting a record of 68 games. We look to ride the Wolfpack’s momentum and advance to one more game with an 11-6 upset win over Texas Tech. North Carolina State’s Cinderella dream ended in front of Kentucky, which clinched a ticket to the Sweet 16.
It also takes Marquette past Colorado to the Sweet 16. In the Sweet 16, give me Kentucky instead of Maquette. In another Sweet 16 matchup, I’m going with Houston over James Madison. Please tell us about the Wildcats, led by John Calipari, who defeated Houston in the Elite Eight and advanced to the Final Four as the No. 3 seed.
Kentucky’s offense can beat anyone, even if their defense isn’t very good, if they get it right. This is a gamble that Kentucky can outscore its competitors even without the skilled size that they typically have. Kentucky vs. Houston will be an incredible clash of styles. I hope we see that.
Midwest region
This year, Purdue University defeated Montana State University and advanced to the first round. Throw a party, West Lafayette. The Boilermakers’ round-of-32 game against Utah State will be even more difficult, but Purdue believes they have improved enough from last season to be ready for the second weekend.
Will Wade’s McNeese State University team will be looking to pull off a 12-5 upset against a Gonzaga University team that has struggled most of the season. Kansas State wins Sanford, then Kansas State wins McNeese State. While this is far from Bill Self’s best team, the bracket played out in their favor going into the second weekend. Give Purdue over Kansas State to reach the Elite Eight.
The University of Tennessee is a sleeping giant as the No. 2 seed in the Midwest. The winner of Virginia and Colorado will take the Vols to the Sweet 16 after upsetting Texas. Get Tennessee to the Sweet 16. Bring in Creighton and stop the Vols from advancing to the Sweet 16. The Blue Jays bring back so many pieces from last season that they should have enough to compete with Rick Barnes’ team.
Purdue vs. Creighton in the Elite Eight. Can Zach Eady and his friends do it? It’s possible, but get Creighton to the Final Four. The trio of guard Trey Alexander, wing Baylor Scheierman and center Ryan Kalkbrenner is one of the best in the country. Creighton made it to the Final Four last year with just one foul, and I think they can do that this season.
western region
The West feels like a region of chaos. North Carolina State locks in the region as the last No. 1 seed, but in these eyes, the Heels have arguably earned the most favorable path to the top seed slot.we take over heels michigan to reach the Sweet 16.
The upset is about to begin. Grand Canyon will defeat St. Mary’s with a 12-5 upset, and Charleston will defeat Alabama with a 13-4 upset. Give Grand Canyon to the Sweet 16, where they’ll lose to UNC.
New Mexico’s guard play is a perfect fit for March. Give me the Lobos, who beat P.J. Hall and Clemson in the first round and Baylor in the second round. Baylor’s defense is creaky enough to make an upset possible. Dayton defeats Nevada with superstar big man Darron Holmes II, but Dayton’s losing streak ends in the second round against Arizona. For a spot in the Final Four, we will play UNC vs. Arizona in the Caleb Love Bowl. Give me a heel in that matchup.
2024 Final Four predictions: UConn wins back-to-back games.
UW vs. Kentucky is my dream national championship game. Somehow the parentheses worked to make it happen.
Kentucky’s best game is as good as any team in the country. The Wildcats may not play much defense, but their offense is impressive with two superstar freshman guards in Reed Shepard and Rob Dillingham. The Wildcats also have veteran firepower led by Antonio Reeves. It’s absolutely important that Calipari plays that trio as much as possible. If that happens, I could see Kentucky defeating Creighton and advancing to the national title game.
UW has lost just three times all season entering the NCAA Tournament. On December 1st, the Huskies were forced into three-point shots by the Jayhawks and lost to the University of Kansas in a full-fledged road game. They lost to Seton Hall on the road later that month, just days after flying home from Seattle where they defeated Gonzaga. UW also lost on the road to Creighton on a night when the Blue Jays made 50 percent of their 28 3-pointers. Barring any bad luck with injuries or foul trouble, it feels like they’ll need another outlier shot to keep the Huskies out of the picture.
This team can play in every way. Sophomore center Donovan Clingan is an elite rim protector. The senior backcourt of Cam Spencer and Tristen Newton is as good as any in America. Alex Karaban is a great stretch 4 as a sophomore, and Stephon Castle is the type of breakout freshman who will move up NBA draft boards with a deep run. The Huskies can win in a shootout or in a low-scoring game. There is no more perfect team in this field.
Hope they beat Kentucky in the title game, but I don’t think it’ll be close. UW can play in so many different styles, and that versatility will help them become the first team since Billy Donovan’s Florida Gators to win back-to-back college basketball championships.
