There’s something irritating about George Steinbrenner.
Former Bronx Bomber Darryl Strawberry told the Post that the late Yankees owner would not be happy with the team’s 15-year World Series drought.
“I don’t think he would have been too excited about how low the Yankees were and not being able to be in that spot in the championship circle,” said Strawberry, who won three titles in pinstripes.
Boss had his warts, but he couldn’t do anything bad in the world of sluggers.
“George was incredible. He was like a father to me, Doctor. [Gooden] And there are many others,” the player-turned-preacher added.
Strawberry says the boss is misunderstood.
“The media always wanted to rave about how crazy he was. He had love and great passion for the New York Yankees organization,” Strawberry said before his heart attack.
He continued: “I mean, if there were more owners out there who cared about their team winning, a lot of them probably would have been as successful as the Yankees have been for years. What we have accomplished.”
Gooden, who spent three seasons with the Yankees from 1996-1997 and 2000 after an illustrious career with the Mets, also presented his boss with a bouquet of flowers.

“George was a wonderful, loving man. Obviously tough, but he wanted to win and was always invested in the team and cared about the fans,” Gooden said. “And it was true when he said, ‘Once a Yankee, always a Yankee.’ After retiring, I worked for George for six of his years. He cared about the community. He should be in the Hall of Fame, that’s for sure.”
