UC Berkeley Professor Apologizes for ‘Misogynist’ Comment on Dating in the Bay Area
A University of California, Berkeley professor is under fire for allegedly being “misogynistic” after making comments about the quality of women in different parts of the state.
In an off-topic discussion on an online education forum, computer science professor Jonathan Shewchuk sparked controversy when he responded to a student who asked him about dating in the area.
“If you want a girlfriend, get out of the Bay Area.” Shuchak Said According to Berkeley’s student newspaper, on the EdStem bulletin board, daily calories.
He continued, “Almost anywhere else on earth is better in that respect. No kidding at all.”
“You’d be surprised at the stark difference in how women behave in places where there are a lot of women and how they behave within gunfire distance of San Jose or San Francisco,” the professor added.
Schuchak’s comments were unpopular with students and faculty, and he was later forced to apologize.
“We want to be absolutely clear that the offensive content of the original post is contrary to the community values and principles we uphold at UC Berkeley,” said university spokesperson Roqua. Montes told the magazine. “This comment was hurtful and threatening to students, especially women, both in and out of class.”
Rebecca Dunn, a computer science student, said: “It basically implied that women in CS were just potential dates, so I felt very objectified and uncomfortable.” .
In a follow-up post on Edstem, Professor Shewchak’s assistant Lydia Ignatova wrote that she was “appalled” by the professor’s comments, suggesting that they reinforced misogynistic discrimination in the field.
Shadi Ahmadzadeh, a third-year student who was scheduled to enroll in Mr. Shewchak’s class next year, said he was no longer interested in having him as an instructor because he was “so blatantly misogynistic.”
The offending professor later wrote an apology message on the same forum, claiming he had never meant to “convey disrespect for women.”
“I apologize for my reply…I caused some bad feelings that I didn’t intend,” Schuchak wrote in the screenshotted post. Posted On Reddit. “I did not mean to convey any disrespect towards women or anyone else, nor did I mean to condemn innocent people. I value all of my students. I am sorry for making people feel uncomfortable.”
“I hope you understand that my comments are motivated by compassion.” [for the student] and a desire to help students,” he continued. “Life is tough sometimes. I feel for all of you who are having a tough time for whatever reason. Things can get better, and that starts with empathy for each other.”
