On Monday, 14 City Council members voted in favor of the resolution. Rather than veto it, the United States abstained and allowed the bill to pass.

The council called for an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, which began on March 10.th and ends on April 9thth. Additionally, the council called for the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining hostages.

US Ambassador to the United States United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield The United States said it abstained from the resolution because it did not condemn Hamas.

“We appreciate the willingness of the members of this council to improve this resolution by incorporating some of our edits,” Thomas-Greenfield said. “Yet, certain key edits were ignored, including our request to add condemnation of Hamas, and we did not agree with everything in the resolution. We therefore regret that we are unable to vote yes.” I couldn’t do it.”

White House national security spokesman John Kirby said the vote does not represent a “change in policy.”

In response to the resolution, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would not be sending a delegation to Washington, DC, this week that was scheduled to discuss alternatives to ground operations in Rafah.

“The withdrawal of the US from its positions will be a blow to efforts to free the hostages, as international pressure will give Hamas hope that it will accept a ceasefire without releasing the hostages,” Netanyahu said.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has already visited Washington, D.C., and Kirby expects Rafah to be a hot topic.
