Parole board member resigns after releasing man who, hours later, allegedly stabbed 11-year-old boy to death

A state parole board member in Illinois has resigned from his post after releasing a suspect with a history of violence and stalking. The suspect allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend just hours later and fatally stabbed his son.

Monday, 63 years old rian miller Late last month, he resigned from his position as a member of the Illinois Inmate Review Board after the decision to release 37-year-old Crosetti Brand onto the street.

By all accounts, Brando is a dangerous figure who poses a grave threat to society in general, and especially to the many people who have the misfortune of crossing his path. According to reports, he has been stalking Chicago resident Lateria Smith since they broke up in 2006.

Years after their breakup, Brando showed up outside Smith’s house and fired a weapon, punched her in the face at a bus stop after she started dating another man, and even made threatening phone calls to her family. It is reported that they were attacked and stoned. their window. Shortly thereafter, Smith obtained a protective order against Bland.

In 2015, Brando was sentenced for assaulting another ex-girlfriend and pointing a gun at her son. He served only half of his 16-year sentence for the incident and was released on parole in October last year.

Upon his release from prison, Bland allegedly began stalking Smith again. On February 1, Smith called police to report that Bland was outside her home again, ringing the doorbell and continuing to twist the door handle. Bland initially turned himself in, but he claimed he was in the area looking for an apartment. He was then sent to Statesville Correctional Center on a series of charges related to parole violations.

By the time of the Feb. 26 hearing, Brand changed his story again. This time he was denied Completely go to her apartment. “The GPS would have picked it up, but it didn’t pick it up,” he said during the hearing, referring to her ankle monitor. Mr. Smith was not called to testify at the hearing.

Ultimately, Miller, one of five Republicans on the Prisoner Review Board, and two of his PRB colleagues (Independent Crystal Tison and fellow Republican Kenneth Tappy) The decision to release him was approved on March 12, arguing that there was insufficient evidence. I support Mr. Smith’s claim.

Days before Bland’s hearing, Smith asked Judge Thomas Nowinski to grant him an emergency protective order against Bland, citing harassing text messages and his arrival at her apartment on February 1st. I begged. Once again, the system failed Smith, as Judge Nowinski ruled: Bland was still in custody at the time, her case did not qualify as an “emergency,” and another hearing on her case was scheduled for March 13.

Smith did not attend the hearing.

On the morning of March 13, Bland appeared again at Smith’s apartment, this time allegedly carrying a knife. She then forced her way into the apartment and began violently stabbing Smith, who was pregnant, police said. Ms. Smith, 33, was the mother of three children, including an unborn child, but she was not alone at the time. Her two sons, 11-year-old Jayden Perkins and an unnamed 6-year-old boy, were also there.

To protect his mother from further violence, 11-year-old Jaden stepped between Smith and his attacker, resulting in multiple stab wounds. Jaden and Smith were rushed to hospital, but both Smith and her unborn child are expected to survive.

Young Jaden didn’t.

“He’s probably the kindest, most reliable friend I could ever ask for,” 12-year-old Nathaniel Vodak said after holding a candlelight vigil in memory of his late friend. .

Another friend, Alexis Perez, added: “No one can replace him.” “No one can replace him.”

Fortunately, Smith’s 6-year-old boy was not injured in the incident. But with his brother dead and his mother and unborn brother injured, the community is demanding answers from those who allowed the suspect back on the streets. In response to the public outcry, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (Democratic) said Miller’s resignation was the “right decision.”

“It is clear that the evidence in this case was not given the careful consideration that victims of domestic violence deserve, and I am committed to implementing additional safeguards and training to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again,” Pritzker said in a statement. We will do our best to ensure that this is implemented.”

Mr. Miller joined the board in 2021 after 20 years with the state Department of Corrections. She also had her 35 year career in the field of education. The Daily Mail has contacted Ms Miller and her prisoner review committee for comment.

PRB President Donald Shelton similarly resigned on Monday, but it is unclear whether he resigned over Bland’s alleged violent behavior, as he was not directly involved in the decision to release Bland. Mr. Pritzker praised Mr. Shelton’s work. “During his time with the Champaign Police Department and PRB, he worked diligently to keep Illinoisans safe and protect our justice system,” Pritzker said.
