New York Archbishop Cardinal Timothy Dolan joined “Fox & Friends” Friday morning to share a message of hope and resilience for the upcoming Easter Sunday.
Dolan acknowledged that “there seems to be darkness” in the world, referring to the recent murder of New York City police officer Jonathan Diller.
Good Friday is a day celebrated annually by Christians as the anniversary of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

“On Good Friday, we remember the words of the Bible: from 12 o’clock until 3 o’clock darkness fell over the whole earth. Things were so sad that the earth literally wept.”
Dolan said that’s “how we feel sometimes.”

But there is hope to be found in Christ, he said.
“Here’s the scoop. Who gets the last word? Is it death or life? Bad or good? Despair or hope?” Dolan said.
Humanity received the answers to these questions when Jesus rose from the dead on the first Sunday of Easter, he said.

“Of course, Easter teaches us that it is God who has the last word, not Satan,” he said.
“We have a Lord who can transform and change. It’s okay. He transformed the fear, the darkness, the gloom, the trembling of Good Friday. He transformed it into life, resurrection, hope, faith. and joy.”
The cardinal also told how he had recently met with a group of Ukrainian bishops and was “amazed by their spirit.”

The bishops presented Dolan with fragments of a cluster bomb intended to kill the group.
Despite the obvious challenges of living in a war zone, the bishops inspired Dolan with their attitude.
“They’re hopeful, they’re resilient, they know this is going to work. We’ve been through this before, they said. That’s the message of Easter. That’s what we need right now,” he said.

Dolan also theorized that society’s “darkness” and problems may stem from a lack of trust in God and a lack of faith.
“Like that old country-western song, we’re looking for love in all the wrong places,” Dolan said.
He urged people to “return to the first of the Ten Commandments: ‘I am the Lord your God; you shall not have any strange gods before me.'”

“We turn ourselves into gods, and once that happens, it’s over,” he said.
Christians, he said, “look at our God on the cross.”
“Ultimately, the Lord is in charge,” Dolan said. “It’s no wonder that without realizing it, you start thinking, ‘It’s all up to me.'”
