Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru
Mangaluru, March 31: I recently encountered an online scam. Daijiworld Editor-in-Chief Walter Nandarike has become the target of a sophisticated scam designed to deceive innocent citizens. On Thursday, March 28, Mr Nandarike received a suspicious SMS purporting to be from his Canara Bank, urging him to update his Know Your Customer (KYC) details. However, the language used in the message raised questions about its authenticity.
The SMS contained a mobile number for Nandalike to contact for KYC updates. When I called the number, a person claiming to be from Canara Bank answered in Konkani. Adding to the deception, the Truecaller displayed his real Canara Bank logo, giving a false sense of legitimacy.
The caller instructed Nandarike to submit his bank statement to verify his identity. When Nandarike told him that he did not have the passbook available at that time, the caller insisted that he call back when he received the passbook.

Upon calling back, the scammer asked for specific details of the passbook, but when asked about the branch he called from, he could not provide a satisfactory answer. Sensing fraud, Nandarike refused to disclose any further information and ended the call.
In this incident, scammers send messages claiming to be from a trusted bank, forcing unsuspecting individuals to divulge sensitive information such as customer IDs, account numbers, and one-time passwords (OTPs). It shines a light on the widespread scams that exploit people.
To combat such scams, anyone who has fallen victim to these scams or has lost money should contact our helpline number 1930 or report any suspicious activity to https://cybercrime.gov.in/ We encourage you to report it.
Mr. Nandarike’s experience serves as a cautionary tale that highlights the importance of vigilance and skepticism when dealing with unsolicited messages and phone calls, especially regarding financial matters. This highlights the need for increased awareness and stringent measures to effectively combat online fraud.
